metro india news  I hyderabad : A short video featuring Chinese-Canadian educator and YouTuber Jiang Xueqin, popularly known as “Professor Jiang,” has sparked an online debate after being shared by podcaster Jack Neel. In the roughly one-minute clip, Jiang claims that popular large language models such as ChatGPT do not represent genuine artificial intelligence but are heavily manipulated by humans, whom he places “somewhere in India.”

Speaking into a microphone in a book-lined setting, Jiang dismisses the idea that current AI systems operate autonomously. He suggests that the responses generated by ChatGPT are the result of human intervention rather than independent machine generation. Stylised images of hooded figures at computer terminals accompany his remarks. 

The clip is part of Jiang’s broader criticism of contemporary AI. In related discussions, he has compared AI systems with statistical models that produce convincing but non-comprehending outputs, likening chatbots to ELIZA, an early computer programme from the 1960s. He has argued that such systems lack genuine understanding and can influence perception.

Reactions on X were sharply divided. Supporters shared the clip as confirmation of doubts about commercial AI, while critics pointed out that open-weight models can be downloaded and run offline without a remote human typing responses. Others argued that Jiang’s claim overlooks the established architecture of transformer-based language models and the scale and speed at which they generate responses.

Technical research describes large language models as systems that predict tokens based on patterns learned from vast datasets. They do not possess consciousness or require a human to script each response in real time. However, human labour remains important to the AI industry through data annotation, model evaluation, content moderation and reinforcement learning, with workers involved across several countries, including India.

The circulating clip provides no technical demonstration or documentary evidence that teams in India are scripting ChatGPT responses. Instead, it has amplified a wider debate over what constitutes artificial intelligence, the role of human labour and how much users understand about increasingly sophisticated AI systems.

Who is Jiang Xueqin?

Jiang Xueqin, born in 1976 in Guangdong, China, rose to prominence through his YouTube channel Predictive History, which has amassed more than two million subscribers. A Yale graduate with a degree in English literature, he has worked as a history and philosophy teacher at Moonshot Academy, a private high school in Beijing, and previously held researcher affiliations rather than traditional university professorships. Online audiences have dubbed him a modern “Nostradamus” for geopolitical forecasts, including predictions involving U.S. politics and regional conflicts that some followers credit as accurate. Critics, however, have labeled aspects of his commentary as conspiracy-oriented, noting that his public persona leans more on accessible lecturing and speculative analysis than peer-reviewed academic research.
