Hyderabad: Handloom weaving, which stands as a symbol of India’s rich culture and traditions, must be preserved and promoted while extending support to the weavers, said G. Rekha Rani, IAS, Commissioner of the Department of Handlooms and Textiles, Government of Andhra Pradesh.

She emphasised that encouraging the purchase of handloom products would not only strengthen the livelihoods of weavers but also help pass on India’s traditional heritage to future generations. The inauguration of the Andhra Pradesh State Handloom Exhibition (SHE)-2026, organised by the Department of Handlooms and Textiles, Government of Andhra Pradesh, was held grandly in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Smt. G. Rekha Rani, IAS, Commissioner, Department of Handlooms and Textiles, Government of Andhra Pradesh; Kumari Nandamuri Mohana Roopa; and Smt. Nandamuri Seemanthini. The exhibition has been organised at Sri Sathya Sai Nigamagamam in Hyderabad and will continue from October 13 to 26. Visitors can explore the exhibition every day from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

Indian handlooms have a rich history and a unique cultural heritage. The weaving traditions of different regions, each with distinctive techniques and styles, reflect the exceptional skill and craftsmanship of Indian weavers, said Nandamuri Mohana Roopa.

However, changing market conditions and competition from machine-made textiles have made it increasingly important for society to support the handloom sector. Greater patronage for handloom products would create more employment opportunities and provide sustainable livelihoods for families dependent on this traditional profession.

The exhibition aims to showcase the exceptional craftsmanship of weavers and increase public awareness of traditional textiles. It offers visitors an opportunity to explore the uniqueness of handloom products, discover a wide variety of designs and purchase textiles that suit their tastes and preferences. With changing preferences and fashion trends, the handloom sector is also embracing new designs, colour combinations and contemporary styles.

While preserving traditional weaving techniques, creating products that appeal to younger generations can help attract a wider customer base and strengthen the sector.Choosing handloom garments for festivals, weddings, family celebrations and other special occasions is one meaningful way to support weavers and preserve traditional craftsmanship.
