With public movement in and out of Andhra Pradesh’s capital region expected to surge in the coming years, the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) has begun preparations to establish a comprehensive transport infrastructure within Amaravati.

Anticipating the growing commuting needs between the newly planned 'nine cities' in Amaravati and the surrounding regions, APSRTC has formally initiated the process to acquire lands for the construction of bus stands, depots, and intercity terminals.

Officials have drawn up a proposal seeking approximately 165 acres from the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) for these facilities. The request includes land allocations for nine major bus stands and depots, as well as three large intercity interchange terminals designed to handle long-distance bus traffic from different parts of the state and neighboring metros.

As part of the Amaravati capital master plan, the state government is constructing nine themed cities—dedicated to administration, justice, finance, knowledge, health, sports, electronics, media, and tourism. APSRTC plans to establish one major bus stand and a depot in each of these nine zones to facilitate intra-capital mobility. “Each bus stand will require about 5 acres and the accompanying depot another 5 acres. So for the nine locations, we're estimating a total of 90 acres,” said M.Y. Dhaanam, a senior APSRTC official.

To streamline long-distance connectivity and prevent congestion within the core capital area, APSRTC has also proposed three intercity interchange terminals, each located strategically at the city’s periphery. These terminals will serve different regional corridors, where one terminal will handle traffic from Rayalaseema, Bengaluru, and Chennai, another from Nortn Andhra and Visakhapatnam, and a third for buses from Hyderabad and Telangana.

Each terminal is expected to require 25 acres, summing up to 75 acres for all three. “These interchange terminals will act as transit points,” the official added. “Passengers coming from outside can alight here and board city buses to reach their destinations within Amaravati. This will minimize the load on inner roads and make commuting efficient.”

The APSRTC management has finalized the land requirement plans and submitted formal proposals to the CRDA. A parallel proposal is also being prepared to be presented before the Andhra Pradesh government.

Once the government clears the land allocation, APSRTC plans to roll out construction in phases. Modern bus terminals with passenger amenities, electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, and digital ticketing systems are expected to be part of the blueprint. Officials also hinted at possible integration with metro and suburban rail plans, if and when they materialize.
