BJP legislators on Sunday came down heavily on the Congress government, demanding immediate compensation for flood-hit farmers and clarity on reservation policies. They accused the state of neglecting farmers in distress while pursuing divisive quota politics.

Speaking at the Assembly Media Point in the Telangana Legislative Assembly premises on Sunday, BJP Deputy Floor Leader Payal Shankar said heavy rains on August 15 and 16 had devastated crops across multiple districts, causing losses worth thousands of crores.

Farmers, he noted, had lost nearly 70–80% of their investments and were now facing financial and emotional collapse. “When we visited the affected villages, farmers were speechless with despair. The state failed to even ensure crop insurance despite budget allocations,” he charged, demanding that compensation be announced immediately during the ongoing session.

MLA Rama Rao Pawar added that soybean, cotton, and paddy crops in the Godavari basin were among the worst affected. He urged the government to declare compensation of Rs 50,000 per acre for soybean, Rs 40,000 for cotton, and Rs 35,000 for paddy. “We call farmers kings, but in reality, they are being abandoned,” he remarked.

On the issue of reservations, MLA Surya Narayana reiterated BJP’s support for 42% quota for Backward Classes but strongly opposed the 10% reservation for Muslims. “If Muslim quotas are justified, will Waqf Board lands be given to Hindus in return?” he asked.

MLA Palvai Harish Babu alleged that harassment of podu farmers had already cost BRS its base in Shankaragiri and warned that Congress could face the same backlash. He demanded the scrapping of GO 49, terming it “anti-farmer.”
