BJP Opposes CURE Act, Indiramma Housing Scheme

BJP Telangana president N. Ramchander Rao on Tuesday alleged that the Congress government was imposing an additional financial burden on Hyderabad residents through the proposed Core Urban Region Economy (CURE) Act and the Indiramma Housing Scheme.

Addressing a press conference, Rao claimed the CURE Act would enable annual property tax hikes of up to five per cent and separate charges for water and sewerage services. He alleged that the proposed legislation diluted the spirit of the 74th Constitutional Amendment, lacked accountability, and was introduced without consulting Resident Welfare Associations or the public.

Criticising the Indiramma Housing Scheme, Rao said collecting a Rs.10,000 earnest money deposit (EMD) and a Rs.100 application fee from applicants for only 7,680 flats was unfair to the poor. He alleged that the government was using the scheme to collect money from applicants and claimed it could generate nearly Rs.1,000 crore. The BJP leader demanded that vacant government-built houses be allotted to eligible beneficiaries free of cost and sought a probe into why they remain unoccupied. He also accused the Congress government of taking credit for houses built under the Centre's Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and said the BJP would oppose the proposed legislation both inside and outside the Assembly.
