Hyderabad-based theatre veteran Mohammad Ali Baig’s debut feature film Chand Tara is set to gain international spotlight with its trailer premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. The film, produced under Epic Theatre Productions and supported by multiple collaborators, marks Baig’s entry into global cinema as writer, director, producer, and lead actor.

Chand Tara is based on the legend of a 17th-century singer-dancer from the Deccan region, blending history, culture, and artistic expression. The project features contributions from several acclaimed names, including music composer Karthik Illaiyaraja, singers Lucky Ali and Vasundhara Das, and actors Anupam Kher, Mohan Agashe, Ranjana Shrivastava, and Masood Akhtar. Vinita Pittie has designed the costumes.

The film has also received co-production support from Telangana Tourism, with backing from NFDC and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, which reportedly found the project culturally rich and aesthetically compelling.

Baig, a Padma Shri awardee and one of India’s youngest theatre honourees, has earlier represented Indian theatre at global platforms such as Oxford University and the Edinburgh Festival. With Chand Tara, he continues his journey from stage to screen, bringing Deccan heritage to an international audience.

The film is planned for release in India on June 3. Baig also showcased Telangana’s Ikat and Pochampally silk on the Cannes red carpet during the event.
