China’s Foreign Ministry dismissed the criticism, describing the launch as a routine military exercise.

Beijing: China on Monday successfully test-fired a long-range strategic missile from a nuclear-powered submarine into the Pacific Ocean, drawing criticism from Japan and Australia despite prior notification of the launch.

The People’s Liberation Army Navy said the missile, carrying a dummy warhead, was launched at 12.01 pm and landed accurately in designated waters. It described the exercise as part of its annual training programme conducted in accordance with international law.

Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong called the launch “destabilising”, citing China’s military build-up. Japan expressed serious concern and urged Beijing to avoid actions that could threaten regional security.
