In a move that blends welfare with technology, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday announced the launch of an Uber-style mobile application for auto drivers, aimed at transforming the way they connect with passengers. The announcement came during the launch of the “Auto Driverla Sevalo” scheme in Vijayawada, where the Chief Minister personally rode in an auto-rickshaw alongside drivers and their families to mark the occasion.

The scheme, a first-of-its-kind initiative, saw the government directly crediting ₹15,000 each to the accounts of 2.9 lakh auto, maxi cab and taxi drivers, amounting to ₹436 crore in financial support. But Naidu’s bigger promise lay in creating a sustainable system for drivers.

“We will create an app for auto drivers so that they can get bookings directly on their phones, without waiting endlessly at auto stands. A control room will be set up to support this initiative and ensure you get regular work,” the Chief Minister said, addressing a sea of drivers at Singh Nagar stadium.

For many drivers, the announcement was more than a political message, it was a lifeline. Standing beside his yellow-and-black auto, Apsar Khan, a driver from Vijayawada who ferried the CM during the rally, said, “Most days, we wait for hours at stands hoping for passengers. If this app works like he says, we can spend less time waiting and more time earning. It gives us hope that our children will have a better future.”

Speaking to Metro India another auto driver, Ranga said, “It is really wonderful that the government has come up with this initiative for our welfare. Although there are apps like Uber, Ola and Rapido, we end up paying large amounts towards their fees and app charges. But with the government stepping in and offering such services, we can save some of the profits and live better.”

The government also announced the formation of an Auto Drivers’ Welfare Board, promising to address issues ranging from insurance to pensions. In addition, plans are underway to encourage electric autos, gradually integrating them into the system. Women drivers received special recognition when Minister Lokesh traveled with T. Swarnalatha, highlighting inclusivity in the sector.

The Chief Minister contrasted his administration with the past, recalling how poor roads and unjust fines had burdened drivers. “In 16 months, we repaired 23,000 km of roads so your earnings go to families, not repairs,” he said. He urged drivers to spread the word about coalition governance. “Tell ten people what this government has done for you.”

The rally, joined by Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, Minister Nara Lokesh, and BJP State President PVN Madhav, turned into a festive show of solidarity. For drivers across the state, Saturday felt like a festival. As one beneficiary showed a text alert confirming the credit of ₹15,000, the crowd erupted in cheer. “This is our Dasara, our Deepavali,” said a group of drivers, waving their phones.
