CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby announced that the party will organize a massive dharna at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi on March 24 to protest against what he termed as the BJP-led Central government’s anti-people, anti-worker and anti-farmer policies. He alleged that the recent free trade agreement with the United States poses a serious threat to the country’s economic sovereignty, impacting not only agriculture but multiple sectors and overall GDP growth.
Addressing the media along with Politburo member B.V. Raghavulu and State Secretary John Wesley, Baby criticized the Centre for allowing market forces to dictate governance. He questioned why decisions on India’s crude oil imports should be influenced by the United States, asking what role then remains for the Prime Minister and the Petroleum Minister. He accused the Modi government of weakening MGNREGA by underfunding it and shifting 40% of the financial burden onto states, calling the promise of extending work to 125 days “deceptive.”
He also opposed the Electricity Amendment Bill, Labour Codes, and proposed university reforms, stating they would adversely affect farmers, workers, and common citizens.John Wesley demanded that the Telangana Congress government fulfill its electoral promises, including enhanced education funding and BC reservations. He warned of intensified agitations if commitments remain unimplemented and criticized both BJP and Congress governments for supporting Labour Codes.
