Dump yard pollution alarms residents

MEDCHAL-MALKAJGIRI : Pollution from the Jawaharnagar dumping yard has become a major health concern for thousands of residents living in nearby colonies, with complaints of foul odour, smoke and unhygienic surroundings increasing in recent months. People living in Karmika Nagar and adjoining slums say respiratory and skin-related ailments are becoming more common. A health screening camp conducted by a private organisation found 51 of the 150 people examined suffering from various illnesses.

Among 26 residents tested for respiratory problems, 16 were diagnosed with lung-related conditions, while 35 people were found to have skin diseases. Around 25,000 people live near the 351-acre dumping yard. Officials also identified deficiencies in the sewage treatment plant and recommended using CSR funds to improve drinking water and healthcare services in the area.
