A major public health scare has gripped Andhra Pradesh after four persons died and several others fell critically ill following the alleged consumption of adulterated milk in Rajamahendravaram city of East Godavari district. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Monday announced a comprehensive investigation into the incident and declared an ex-gratia payment of ₹10 lakh each to the families of the deceased.

Making a statement in the State Assembly, the Chief Minister expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families and assured strict action against those responsible if adulteration is confirmed. He informed the House that the milk supply linked to the incident reportedly originated from Varalakshmi Dairy in Narasapuram. Milk samples have already been collected and sent to laboratories in Hyderabad for scientific analysis. “Those found responsible will not be spared under any circumstances,” Naidu warned, adding that the government would bear the full cost of medical treatment for the affected victims.

Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav informed the Assembly that a total of 12 persons were initially hospitalised after falling ill, of whom four succumbed, while eight others continue to receive treatment. Two patients remain in critical condition and are on ventilator support. Preliminary medical findings suggest acute kidney failure, marked by anuria (cessation of urine output), as a key complication among victims.

The tragedy unfolded in the city’s Choudeswari Nagar, Swaroop Nagar, and Lalacheruvu areas, where residents reportedly consumed milk supplied by a single vendor. According to officials, many patients developed severe renal complications soon after consumption. Doctors noted symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and reduced urination, with elderly persons particularly affected.

Chief Minister Naidu also conducted a high-level review meeting and directed officials to ensure the best possible medical care for those undergoing treatment. He ordered a detailed inquiry and sought an immediate report on the causes of the incident.
