GHMC and the year that was

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has had an interesting year and one can say a roller coaster ride in 2024. Cash-strapped for funds, yet managing to look into the civic issues of the city. Here is a list of works undertaken and allocations made for upcoming projects.

Town Planning

GHMC has allocated Rs 200 crore for the widening of four major roads, including stretches from Dabeerpura Police Station to Nagabowli and Shastripuram Junction to Falaknuma Bus Depot.

Junction Improvement

To reduce traffic congestion, development work has been initiated at 74 junctions across Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda Commissionerates at a cost of Rs 233 crore.

 TG-bPASS

In 2024, 14,043 building permissions were issued under the TG-bPASS system, generating Rs 815.76 crore revenue for GHMC. Under the H-CITI project, 38 road improvement proposals were submitted, of which 27 have been approved, and land acquisition has commenced.

SHGs and Skill Development

For 2024-25, GHMC disbursed Rs 564.61 crore in loans to 5,174 SHGs and established 1,075 new SHGs. Additionally, skill development centers were set up in Chandanagar, Macha Bolarum, Mallepally, and Borabanda under CSR, providing skill training to unemployed youth.

Urban Community Development (UCD)

Under the Indira Mahila Shakti Scheme, Rs 28.71 crore was spent on 230 group units, and Rs 52.31 crore on 2,871 individual units. The PM-SVANidhi Scheme supported 95,273 street vendors with loans amounting to Rs 162.36 crore.

SNDP Flood Mitigation Projects

GHMC initiated 34 stormwater drain projects covering 46.7 km at an estimated cost of Rs 528.51 crore. By 2025, six projects are expected to be completed.

Sports Initiatives

GHMC successfully conducted a summer coaching camp for children aged 6-16 in 44 sports across 915 centers. For 2025, plans include: Developing sports grounds in Fatullaguda, Victory Playground Stadium, and PJR Sports Complex, enhancing football fields in Vijayanagar Colony, Amberpet, and Golkonda Owaisi Grounds, hosting national tennis tournaments at Indira Park and developing badminton academies under CSR.

Beautification

To enhance Hyderabad’s image, beautification works worth Rs 149.84 crore have been undertaken, including sculptures, themed paintings, and landscaping in parks and flyovers. As of now, 15 projects worth Rs 5.33 crore have been completed, while 209 are in progress.

Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP)

To address increasing traffic congestion, GHMC is implementing the SRDP with an investment of Rs 5,937 crore. Out of 42 projects, 37 have been completed, including 23 flyovers. The remaining projects are targeted for completion by December 2025.

Water Holding Structures

To address waterlogging during monsoons, GHMC initiated 50 water-holding structures at an estimated cost of Rs 100 crore. Construction of 14 structures with a capacity of 2-10.4 lakh liters is underway, with 11 nearing completion.

Information Technology

GHMC implemented AI-powered mobile facial recognition for attendance tracking in the sanitation and veterinary departments. This system enhances accuracy and reduces operational costs compared to biometric systems.

Key features include, AI-based real-time facial recognition, random attendance tracking by supervisors, and significant cost savings in payroll management.

The facial recognition system is being extended to GHMC headquarters staff to ensure accountability and precise attendance records.
