Gig and platform workers associated with major app-based delivery services across Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra are likely to join the nationwide strike called by workers’ unions, officials said on Wednesday. With New Year’s Eve expected to witness peak demand for food and quick-commerce deliveries, the police have stepped up monitoring to ensure law and order is maintained.

Officials said Maharashtra Police are closely tracking developments linked to the proposed strike to prevent any untoward incidents, especially in urban centres. While no major disruptions or law-and-order issues are anticipated, authorities acknowledged that app-based delivery services could face partial disruption during the day.

Workers’ unions, including the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union (TGPWU) and the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT), have claimed that lakhs of gig workers across the country are expected to participate. The strike is aimed at pressing demands such as better payouts, transparent incentive structures, and improved working conditions for app-based workers.

The proposed action could impact operations of popular food delivery and quick-commerce platforms such as Zomato, Swiggy, Blinkit, Instamart, and Zepto, particularly on New Year’s Eve when order volumes are typically at their highest.
