Headline inflation hits 2.10%, lowest since Jan 2019

Headline inflation based on the All India Consumer Price Index declined to a 77-month low of 2.1% in June 2025, marking the lowest monthly inflation rate since January 2019, according to official statistics released by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation on Monday.

There is a decline of 72 bps in headline inflation of June 2025 as compared to May 2025. The year-on-year food inflation rate based on All India Consumer Food Price Index for the month of June 2025 over June 2024 stood at -1.06%. Corresponding inflation rates for rural and urban stood at -0.92% and -1.22%, respectively. A sharp decline of 205 bps is observed in food inflation in June.

The significant decline in headline inflation and food inflation during the month of June is mainly attributed to favourable base effect and decline in inflation of vegetables, pulses and products, meat and fish, cereals and products, sugar and confectionery, milk and products and spices, official sources said.

Significant decline in headline and food inflation in the rural sector observed in June 2025. The headline inflation is 1.72% in June as compared to 2.59% in May. The CFPI based food inflation in the rural sector is observed as -0.92% in June as against 0.95% in May. Urban inflation recorded a significant decline from 3.12% in May 2025 to 2.56% in June. Sharp decline was observed in food inflation from 1.01% in May 2025 to -1.22% in June 2025.

The urban sector housing inflation for the month of June stood higher at 3.24% as against 3.16% in May. Year-on-year education (rural and urban sector combined) inflation rate for the month of June stood higher at 4.37% as against 4.12% in May. Health Inflation rate stood at 4.43% as against 4.34%. Transport & Communication inflation rate stood at 3.90% as compared to 3.85%. Fuel & light inflation rate was lower at 2.55% as against 2.84%. 

Wholesale inflation

India’s wholesale inflation turned negative and hit a 20-month low of -0.13% in June 2025, data released by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry revealed on Monday. The wholesale inflation had declined to a 14-month low of 0.4% in May this year. The annual rate of inflation based on the All India Wholesale Price Index (WPI) number is (-) 0.13% for the month of June, 2025 over June, 2024.
