Indian Railways has partnered with Indofast Energy to establish a widespread battery-swapping network across Hyderabad and Secunderabad divisions, marking a significant push toward cleaner urban mobility.
Under this initiative, 80 battery swap stations have already been installed across 25 railway stations—56 under the Secunderabad division and 24 under Hyderabad division. Another 40 stations are planned to be deployed in the next three months, offering a major boost to the country’s clean energy goals.
The effort is being led by South Central Railway in partnership with Indofast Energy, a 50:50 joint venture between IndianOil and SUN Mobility. Indofast Energy operates on a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model and is rapidly expanding its reach to support India’s transition to electric mobility.
The battery-swapping stations are targeted at electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers, enabling quick energy refueling and removing range anxiety for daily commuters, delivery partners, and ride-share drivers. The stations are integrated into key railway premises to ensure accessibility and ease of use.
According to Indian Railways, the project aligns with the Railway Board’s policy on promoting e-mobility at stations and helps reduce emissions and traffic congestion near station zones.
Anant Badjatya, CEO of Indofast Energy, said that operational stations in Hyderabad are already proving vital for improving last-mile delivery and daily commute options. The strong response, he added, highlights the need for such sustainable infrastructure in urban areas.
R Gopalakrishnan, Divisional Railway Manager, South Central Railway, noted that the deployment of these stations strengthens the commitment to greener transit systems and showcases the power of public-private partnerships in driving sustainable innovation.
Indofast Energy currently operates over 1,000 battery swap stations across 21 cities in India, handling more than 1.4 million battery swaps per month. Over the next three years, the company plans to set up over 10,000 stations across 40+ cities, targeting more than one million EV users.
By offering fast, affordable, and reliable battery swaps, this collaboration is expected to transform India’s public transit landscape and accelerate the nation’s journey toward a sustainable and connected mobility future.
