Twenty-two Indie puppies found loving homes at the GHMC’s “Indie Puppy Adoption Mela” held Sunday at KBR Park. Organized under the theme “Be a Hero, Adopt, Don’t Shop,” the event showcased 35 fully vaccinated and healthy Indian-breed puppies, with 22 successfully adopted.
GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan and Khairatabad Zonal Commissioner Anurag Jayanti inaugurated the mela, which drew strong participation from pet lovers, NGOs, and civic officials. Karnan personally handed over the first puppy to Chintakunta Raju of Shaikpet, emphasizing that adoption is not just acceptance but a bond of responsibility and affection.
Highlighting the resilience, intelligence, and adaptability of Indian breeds, Karnan said such initiatives help reduce stray dog populations and prevent dog-bite incidents. He announced that similar adoption melas will be held across all GHMC zones.
The Veterinary Wing led the effort, with support from Jubilee Hills Deputy Commissioner V. Sammaiah, Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Abdul Wakeel, and other officials. Animal welfare groups praised GHMC’s proactive approach, calling the mela a model for other civic bodies.
The event also raised awareness about responsible pet ownership and the benefits of adopting local breeds. GHMC’s initiative was widely appreciated for combining compassion with civic responsibility, offering a humane solution to street dog issues.
