Kishan Reddy urges youth to embrace STEM

Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy on Saturday highlighted the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) while addressing the Smart Genius Global Level Competition in Hyderabad, which saw participation from over 10,000 students worldwide.

Calling such events crucial for developing analytical thinking and confidence, he praised the students for solving complex math problems within minutes. Reddy underscored India’s rich mathematical heritage and said modern initiatives such as Atal Tinkering Labs and programs encouraging girls in science are strengthening innovation. 

Kishan Reddy further said that India has been a pioneer in the world in Mathematics since ancient times. Great minds like Aryabhatta, Bhaskaracharya and Srinivasa Ramanujan, and ancient texts like Surya Siddhanta laid the foundation for trigonometry. In the current era, Indian youth have been winning Olympiads and were at the forefront in the fields like space exploration and artificial intelligence, he added.

Further, the Union minister noted that the new education system has expanded the opportunities to study science and engineering in local languages and that Coding and creativity were being encouraged through more than 10,000 Atal Tinkering labs. Programs like Vigyan Jyoti are encouraging girls in the field of science, he added.

He noted that India’s research expenditure has doubled over the last decade and announced that the country will host the India-AI Impact Summit in 2026, urging youth to play a leading role in building a developed India by 2047.
