Warangal MP Dr. Kadiyam Kavya has urged the Centre to extend the Smart Cities Mission (SCM) in Telangana, expressing concern over its scheduled closure and the impact on projects in Greater Warangal and Karimnagar.

In Parliament, MP Kadiyam Kavya requested the Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry to extend the mission’s deadline to June 2026, ensuring ongoing infrastructure projects are completed.

However, Minister of State Tokhan Sahu denied the request, confirming the SCM officially ended on March 31, 2025, with no scope for extension. A government advisory issued on June 10, 2025, directed all remaining projects to be completed through the existing Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) structure.

In Greater Warangal, 119 of 159 projects worth Rs 1,386 crore (66%) are complete, while 40 projects worth Rs 415 crore are still underway. Karimnagar has completed 49 of 61 projects, totaling Rs 979 crore (76%), with 12 projects worth Rs 115 crore pending.

Dr. Kavya’s appeal underlines the urgency to finish key urban projects, but with the Centre’s refusal, local bodies must now independently oversee and fund the remaining work casting doubt on timely completion.
