NTPC has approved an investment of ₹20,456.70 crore for the 1,600 MW Lara Super Thermal Power Project Stage-III in Chhattisgarh, expanding its thermal power generation capacity. The state-owned power producer said its board cleared the investment proposal for the project, comprising two 800 MW generating units, at its meeting on 11 July.

The expansion is part of NTPC's strategy to meet rising electricity demand while supporting greater integration of renewable energy into the grid. Last month, the company invited bids from technology providers to enhance the operational flexibility of its sub-critical thermal power units. The initiative aims to enable 150 MW-250 MW units to operate at lower technical loads and in two shifts, helping distribution companies manage fluctuations in renewable energy. NTPC said the Lara Stage-III project will strengthen its generation portfolio and support reliable electricity supply as India continues its energy transition.
