PM Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel has “probably” killed Mohammed Sinwar, Hamas’ elusive de facto leader in Gaza.
“We have eliminated tens of thousands of terrorists,” Netanyahu said at a press conference on Wednesday evening. “We eliminated the leaders of the murderers Deif, Haniyeh, Yahya Sinwar and probably Mohammad Sinwar.”
Israel targeted Sinwar in a massive set of strikes on the European hospital in Khan Younis last week. The attack killed 28 Palestinians and wounded more than 50 others, the Palestinian health ministry said after the strike. If Sinwar’s death is confirmed, it would be the latest in a string of assassinations that have dealt a serious blow to the group’s top brass but are yet to break its grip on power.
Sinwar is the brother of former leader Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by the Israeli military in southern Gaza in October.
On Thursday, Israeli military strikes killed at least 35 Palestinians across Gaza, local health authorities said.
Meanwhile, voluntary organisations have collected humanitarian aid carried by about 90 trucks, out of a total of nearly 200 that have entered Gaza since Israel began allowing limited goods in earlier this week, the UN said on Thursday.
Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN Humanitarian agency OCHA, said the trucks that entered carried medicine, wheat flour and nutrition supplies.
Aid groups faced significant challenges distributing the goods because of insecurity, the risk of looting and coordination issues with Israeli authorities, Laerke added.
