Preserve Cheriyal Nakashi art: Governor

Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla has appreciated the rich artistic heritage of Cheriyal Nakashi painting, a traditional folk art form that has brought a distinct identity to the State. The Nakashi masks, representing the centuries-old folk art tradition, was a special attraction at the Independence Day At Home reception to be hosted at Lok Bhavan on Saturday evening.

As part of the arrangements for the Independence Day At Home reception, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla and his wife Janaki Shukla, viewed the Nakashi masks displayed at Lok Bhavan. The Governor was impressed by the intricate craftsmanship and distinctive features of the art form and appreciated Nakashi artist Danalakota Rakesh for his efforts to preserve and promote the traditional art.

Rakesh explained to the Governor and his wife the unique features of Nakashi art, the process involved in making the masks and the traditional knowledge associated with the craft. He said he had learnt the art from his father, renowned Nakashi artist Danalakota Vaikuntham.

Rakesh said his father had made significant contributions towards taking Cheriyal Nakashi art to national prominence. He recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had, in his Mann Ki Baat programme in 2024, specially appreciated the talent of Cheriyal-based artist Danalakota Vaikuntham and his decades-long efforts to preserve the Nakashi tradition. The recognition on Mann Ki Baat, he said, helped introduce the rich heritage of the centuries-old folk art to people across the country.

A collection of Nakashi paintings reflecting Telangana’s culture and traditions has also been put on display at the Durbar Hall of Lok Bhavan. The paintings depict themes including Bathukamma, episodes from the Ramayana, Krishna Leela, scenes from the lives of rural women and the birth of Lord Ganesha, among others.

The Governor said Cheriyal Nakashi painting occupies a special place in Telangana’s rich folk-art heritage. He emphasised the need to encourage traditional art forms, appreciate the contribution of artisans and ensure that such invaluable cultural traditions are preserved and passed on to future generations.
