With US President Trump missing out on the Nobel peace prize, the social media was deluged with memes making fun of him, but the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement wasn't amused.
Writing on X, prominent MAGA figures with large social media followers expressed their disappointment over Nobel committee picking Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado for the prize.
MAGA Voice, an account with over 1.3 million followers wrote: "Some random person that nobody knows, Maria Machado, just won the Nobel Peace Prize THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE IS A JOKE. Anyone with a brain knows Donald Trump should have won TRUMP COULD HAVE CURED CANCER SUCH A JOKE."
Right-wing activist Laura Loomer called Machado's win "affirmative action nonsense." Another X user said "the committee has lost all credibility."
But a large number of social media users had a different view. One user commented tongue firmly in cheek, “How dare the Nobel committee exclude President Trump @realDonaldTrump from the race? Tariffs on Norway are unstoppable now.”
Another wrote, “There would be a big tariff on the Nobel Peace Prize Committee. Tremendous peace work deserves respect. Nobody’s been treated so unfairly. Very, very unfair!”
“When they kicked him out of Twitter, Trump created his own private social network; now he'll create his own stars-and-stripes Nobel Peace Prize with himself as the first winner! Would anyone be surprised?” a user questioned.
Call for Israel prize to Trump
Israel Prize laureate Ronny Douek nominated Trump for the Israel Prize for Lifetime Achievement and Special Contribution to Society and the State. In a letter to Education Minister Yoav Kisch, Douek asked that the prize be presented on Israel’s I-Day and requested an exception to allow a non-Israeli recipient.
Putin hits out at Nobel panel
Russian Prez Vladimir Putin criticised the Nobel committee, saying it had awarded the prize to “people who did nothing for peace” and have damaged the prize’s reputation”. “Trump is definitely making effort and working on these issues — on achieving peace and resolving complex international affairs," he said.
