Looking for a one-of-a-kind experience under the full moon? Andhra Pradesh is all set to rekindle the magic of its iconic ‘Punnami Orvakal’ festival, a celebration of natural beauty and cultural vibrance amidst the stunning rock formations of Orvakal. Drawing inspiration from globally renowned festivals like the Rann of Kutch, the state government aims to elevate this event into a must-visit biannual attraction.
Originally conceptualized during the TDP government’s tenure, Punnami Orvakal was a massive hit for its fusion of natural wonders and traditional festivities. Now, its revival promises an even grander experience. From live cultural performances to luxury accommodations under the night sky, the festival is a tribute to the region’s extraordinary landscape, often likened to the Grand Canyon of the United States.
Situated just 23 kilometers from Kurnool and 53 kilometers from Nandyal, the Orvakal Rock Garden is a geological marvel. Its three-billion-year-old rock formations composed of silica and quartz span an impressive 50 acres. Towering up to 300 feet, these natural sculptures are etched by time and wind, creating a surreal backdrop that is further enhanced by the Penna River flowing through its hills, much like the Colorado River carving through the Grand Canyon. The picturesque site will host the Punnami Orvakal festival on a sprawling 200-acre setup.
The festival will feature live orchestras and cultural programs performed by renowned artists and themed decorations to complement the mystical ambiance of the full moon. Luxury accommodations, including air-conditioned tents available in three packages (Rs 5,000, Rs 10,000, and Rs 15,000), each catering to groups of four for three-day stays with food included. The Orvakal Rock Garden itself is a hub of attractions, meticulously developed by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC). Visitors can explore the stunning rock formations on foot via specially designed walkways, dine at the on-site restaurant, and stay in cozy cottages. Families will appreciate the metal animal garden, children’s play area, and ample parking facilities, ensuring a wholesome experience for all age groups. This package is particularly aimed at weekend tourists from nearby cities like Bangalore and Hyderabad. “We are targeting software employees from these cities with curated weekend packages,” said Vinay Chand, Director of AP Tourism. “In 2025, there are three full moons falling on weekends, providing the perfect opportunity to enjoy the stunning rock formations in moonlight.”
The revival of Punnami Orvakal is part of a broader tourism push that includes significant developments at Gandikota Fort, another gem of Andhra Pradesh. Often referred to as the “Impregnable Fort,” Gandikota boasts historic walls, majestic turrets, and awe-inspiring views of the Penna River gorge.
The government plans to introduce a seaplane service to Gandikota by March, along with adventure sports such as trekking, boating, and even parachuting. These initiatives aim to transform the fort into a hotspot for both history buffs and adrenaline seekers.
With Punnami Orvakal’s revival and the parallel development of Gandikota, Andhra Pradesh is making bold strides toward establishing itself as a premier tourist destination. By blending natural splendor, historical grandeur, and innovative attractions, the state is creating a unique offering that promises to captivate travelers and boost local economies.
So, if you’re seeking a magical escape under the full moon, mark your calendars for the Punnami Orvakal Festival where ancient rocks, cultural performances, and lunar light converge for an unforgettable experience.
