Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU) organized a special felicitation ceremony on Mother’s Day to honor Mothers, who selflessly donated their kidneys to save the lives of their children. The event, themed ‘Second Life, by Mom’- Celebrating the mothers who gave life — not once, but twice.
This year AINU celebrated Mother’s Day in a noble manner by sharing a few remarkable stories of mothers who donated kidneys to save the lives of their children. The heartfelt event brought together doctors, patients, and families to celebrate this act of extraordinary courage and love. Recipients, who are now recovering well post-transplant, also participated in the event. In the event, the kidney transplant recipients shared their journey of emotions and torment experienced during their illness and how their mothers (donors) changed their lives forever.
Dr. C Mallikarjuna, Managing Director and Chief Consultant Urologist, AINU, said, ‘Organ donation is one of the most profound gifts one person can give to another. It is the ultimate act of selflessness. These mothers went beyond nurturing—they gave their children a second chance at life. Today, we honor that incredible sacrifice. The advantages of living donor transplants, especially from family members, particularly mothers, tend to last longer, function immediately after transplant, and are often a closer match, reducing the risk of rejection and offering children a quicker return to healthy, active lives.’
Mothers are the leading donors in living kidney transplants to children, making up the majority of such donations across pediatric transplant cases. At AINU, one third of the kidney donors happen to be mothers apart from immediate family members.
