The ambitious upgradation of Secunderabad Railway Station is progressing steadily, with overall construction now around 56% complete. Categorised as an NSG-1 (Non-Suburban Grade 1) station, Secunderabad serves as a major transport hub in the capital region of Telangana, handling approximately 180 trains daily and a footfall of 1.5- 1.9 lakh passengers. Scheduled to be completed by December 2026, the station could handle 2.7 lakh passengers.

The upgradation project, sanctioned at Rs 714.73 crore and awarded in September 2022 to M/s Girdharilal Constructions Pvt Ltd, aims to transform the station into a world-class facility. The redevelopment includes a new iconic station building with G+3 floors (22,516 sq.m), an extended South-side building (14,792 sq.m), and a two-level air concourse (108m x 120m) connecting the terminal buildings. The air concourse will feature waiting areas on the first level and retail, cafeterias, and recreational facilities on the second.

Major works also include a through roof covering all platforms and tracks, multi-level parking with 400 ECUs on the North side and 200 ECUs on the South, 26 lifts, 32 escalators, and travelators. Two foot overbridges, multi-modal integration with Secunderabad East & West Metro stations via a 9m-wide skywalk, and renovation of existing platforms are part of the modernization plan. The station will also feature solar power generation (5,000 kWp), 100 EV charging points, a 500 KL sewage treatment plant, rainwater harvesting pits, and advanced security systems.

Completed works include a temporary booking office on the North side, the new RPF building, one FOB towards Kazipet, platform shelters, and parking shed nearing completion. Ongoing works include the South-side basement, main building, and approach road, multi-level parking, North main building, air concourse foundation and slab work, roof cover over platforms, and FOBs at various points. The underground water tanks and STP are progressing, while foundation work for the metro connectivity skywalk is in progress.

Officials confirm that civil structures for most major buildings are complete, and mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection works are nearing completion in several areas. The project is on schedule and targeted for completion by December 2026, promising a state-of-the-art facility for passengers and a significant upgrade to the city’s transportation infrastructure. The modernized Secunderabad station is set to become a benchmark for railway infrastructure, integrating convenience, sustainability, and advanced passenger amenities.
