Shankaracharya to launch agitation for cow protection

07-03-2026 12:00:00 AM

The shanknaad (sounding of the conch) for a “Dharmayudh” (religious war/crusade) dedicated to the establishment and protection of the cow (Gau Pratishtha) will be sounded in Lucknow on March 11, 2026, according to a clarification issued by the office of Jagadguru Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati. The announcement comes amid reports of confusion caused by some newspapers incorrectly printing the date as March 12.

This program follows the expiration of a 40-day ultimatum given to the Uttar Pradesh government to declare the cow as "Rajyamata" (Mother of the State) and impose a complete ban on cow slaughter and beef exports in the state. The journey will start with prayers at the famous Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple, including recitations of Hanuman Ashtak, Hanuman Chalisa, and Bajrang Baan to seek the removal of obstacles.

The decisive event, the "Dharmayudh Shankhnaad," is set for March 11 (Sheetala Ashtami) at Kanshi Ram Memorial Cultural Site, Pasi Fort Crossing, Ashiyana, Lucknow. The gathering will feature addresses by scholars, saints, and cow devotees sharing their experiences. Organizers have described the Uttar Pradesh government's perceived indifference as testing the patience of cow devotees. The March 11 arrival in Lucknow is positioned as a final warning to the administration.
