Khush Raho with Sangeeta

Being an artist myself, I made it a point to understand more about the impact of different colors. As Nikola Tesla said, "If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration"

The winter sun fell on a day bed in our living room, streaming through the French windows in the afternoons. I was pregnant, now in the anticipation phase, the first trimester and its nausea and discomfort having passed. I was stealing some minutes from my now less hectic work schedule to sunbathe and rest. One of those happy, optimistic, excited mothers to be. A few weeks earlier, my husband and I had attended an exhibition at Triveni Kala Sangam, one of Delhi's most important cultural centers, where art, music, and dance have been taught and passed on to newer generations for decades.

A young artist had exhibited her sketch, ink and pen works in the smaller gallery. We found her drawings interesting, decided to purchase one of her works. We took it home and hung it in our sitting room, above the day bed. A few days into my afternoon rest routine, I realized I had not been sleeping well. My naps were leaving me uncomfortable rather than rested. A sense of unease crept in, a thought that maybe it was the drawing hanging above the day bed that was exuding some unhappy energies I was picking up.

The ink drawing was an abstract exploration of angst, with suggestive human figures that were distorted and in pain. After much hesitation, I spoke to my husband and shared my feeling that this drawing was somehow responsible for my disturbed emotions and bad dreams. Or was I just being ultra sensitive due to the pregnancy? Have you ever spent a day at a museum and come away feeling strangely drained, or elated, or unsettled, without being able to explain why?

Then he said, yes, I think this might be possible. We discussed it for a couple of days and decided to return the drawing to the artist, without asking for a refund. In the many homes we have moved through, we have kept joyous wall hangings, soothing colors, and made sure there was light and air. Being an artist myself, I made it a point to understand more about the impact of different colors. As Nikola Tesla said, "If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration".

If dark, angst-filled art can lower the frequency of a space, it follows that joyful, intentional imagery can raise it. This is the principle behind the vision board, one of the key practices I learnt on a course on manifestation and materialization. It is a pin board on which one makes a collage. The power of visualization to attract what we want is the law of attraction at work.

So whatever energies you want to support your journey in this life, I suggest having some visual cues in your home, whether wall hangings, sculptures, plants, flowers at the doorstep, rangoli, pictures of whatever inspires you, gods, goddesses, sacred geometry, reminders of the divine or of the beauty of nature. Whatever works for you.
