Tragedy struck a government school in Salur of Parvathipuram Manyam district after a portion of the school’s compound wall collapsed during the lunch break, killing a Class 10 student and seriously injuring another. The deceased was identified as Tupakula Arun Teja, 15, while another student, Sondi Yakub, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital for treatment.
According to preliminary information, the two students were sitting on a sloping portion of the compound wall during the lunch break when the structure suddenly gave way. Arun Teja was trapped under the debris and died at the spot. The incident triggered anguish and protests on the school premises. Arun Teja’s parents and family members staged a protest with his body, demanding accountability from officials responsible for maintaining the school infrastructure. Their protest led to tension at the premises as they sought strict action against those whose alleged negligence may have contributed to the tragedy.
The incident has also raised serious questions about the condition and safety of government school infrastructure, particularly structures that are used or accessed by children every day. Education Minister Nara Lokesh expressed deep shock over the student’s death, saying the loss of a young student with a promising future was deeply distressing. He directed officials to ensure the injured student received the best possible medical treatment.
Lokesh also assured the bereaved family that the government would extend necessary support and ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the incident. He said strict action would be taken against those found responsible.
