Suspense over Telangana CS Post

Continuity or Change?

Metro India News | Hyderabad

Uncertainty prevails over the post of Telangana Chief Secretary, the highest bureaucratic position in the state administration, as the tenure of incumbent Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao is set to end on June 30. Discussions are intensifying within government and administrative circles on whether he will be granted another extension or whether a new Chief Secretary will be appointed.

Ramakrishna Rao assumed office as Chief Secretary in April 2025 and was originally due to retire in August that year. However, following a request from the state government, the Centre granted him a seven month extension. Subsequently, another three month extension was approved, allowing him to continue until the end of June 2026.

With several major government initiatives currently at a crucial stage, including the Musi River Rejuvenation Project, Metro Rail expansion, Regional Ring Road, investment promotion efforts, industrial policy implementation, and welfare programme monitoring, the state government is reportedly keen on maintaining administrative continuity. As a result, there is speculation that the government may once again approach the Centre seeking an extension for Ramakrishna Rao.

However, the possibility of a third consecutive extension has sparked considerable debate. While the Centre generally approves such extensions only under exceptional administrative circumstances, some officials believe a strong case from the state government could result in another extension. Others remain doubtful about the likelihood of a third term extension.

Senior IAS Officers in the Race

The discussion over Ramakrishna Rao’s continuation has also brought attention to several senior IAS officers considered eligible for the top post. Sources indicate that some senior bureaucrats, who have long aspired to become Chief Secretary, are unhappy that repeated extensions have delayed their chances.

If the government opts for a new appointment, several names are reportedly under consideration, including Jayesh Ranjan, Vikas Raj, Sabyasachi Ghosh, and Sanjay Jaju, who is currently serving with the Central Government.

Ultimately, the decision rests with the Union Government. Whether the Centre approves another extension for Ramakrishna Rao or clears the way for the appointment of a new Chief Secretary will depend on its response to any formal proposal sent by the Telangana government in the coming weeks.
