The Telangana High Court on Friday declined to grant stay orders regarding the panchayat elections in the State. A number of BC organisations, including Madiwala Machadeva Rajakula Sangham and Telangana Pradesh Gangaputra Sangham, filed separate petitions challenging the State government’s GOMs 46, which allows reservations for BCs, SCs, and STs within a 50 percent limit, requesting a pause on the elections.
During the proceedings, the High Court Bench, which included Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice GM Mohiuddin, decided against issuing stay orders at this time, noting that the election notification had already been published. The Bench also clarified to the petitioners that the court cannot intervene once the election notification is out, as reported.
The Court also inquired whether the petitioners were calling for the cancellation of the elections due to the lack of announced sub-category reservations by the government. The Court has instructed the State government to submit a counter regarding the subcategory reservations within six weeks. According to reports, the next hearing will take place in eight weeks.
