In a major move, the government is moving ahead for the launch of ‘Free Power Scheme’ for weavers, set to begin on August 7, coinciding with National Handloom Day. The initiative is expected to benefit nearly 65,000 handloom households, with an annual government expenditure of Rs.125 crore. Announcing the rollout, the CM reaffirmed his commitment to restoring the dignity and livelihood of weavers, a sector that he said was neglected over the past five years.
CM Naidu’s decision marks the fulfilment of another key election promise, said minister for Handlomm’s, Savitha. “From 2019 to 2024, the handloom sector suffered due to policy inaction and lack of support. In response, the new government has moved swiftly with targeted reforms and welfare initiatives, including a Rs.10,000 crore Textile Policy that aims to provide employment to 1.51 lakh people and ensure 365 days of work for weavers,” she noted.
She further stated that under the NTR Bharosa pension scheme, pensions for 92,724 weavers have been enhanced from Rs.3,000 to Rs.4,000 per month, amounting to Rs.370.89 crore in the first year. The government has launched skill development programmes across five districts to align handloom production with contemporary tastes.
Exhibitions are being organized in Andhra Pradesh and seven other Indian cities to promote handloom products, while e-commerce delivery through APCO ensures direct access to consumers. Weavers are also being supported with raw material subsidies (15% on yarn), Mudra loans, and bank credit through cooperative societies.
Minister Savitha expressed happiness over the scheme’s launch, thanking CM Naidu for his unwavering support to the community. “This initiative ensures financial security and dignity for weaving families. Our aim is to provide year-round employment and strong market linkages,” she said. The Minister also confirmed that elections for handloom cooperative societies will be notified soon.
