Kavuri Sambasiva Rao, popularly known as KS Rao, a veteran Congress leader and former Member of Parliament from Andhra Pradesh, passed away on March 11 at the age of 82. He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Hyderabad.

Born on October 1, 1943, in Eluru (then part of Madras Province), Rao was an accomplished engineer and industrialist before entering politics. A 1965 electrical engineering graduate from NIT Warangal, he built a successful career in industry while remaining deeply connected to public service.

Rao represented Andhra Pradesh in the Lok Sabha for five terms, primarily from the Machilipatnam and Eluru constituencies, serving as a Congress MP. His longest stint came between 2004 and 2014. In 2013, during the UPA government under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he was appointed as a Union Minister, where he contributed to key portfolios.

Hailing from Dosapadu village in Pedaparupudi mandal, Krishna district. Known for his grassroots connect and engineering background, Rao focused on infrastructure, education, and industrial development in his region.

Political leaders across parties expressed grief over his demise. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister extended condolences, describing Rao as a dedicated public servant whose contributions to the state would be remembered. Congress leaders highlighted his loyalty to the party and his role in strengthening its base in coastal Andhra.

Rao is survived by his family, including children and grandchildren.

The passing of KS Rao marks the end of an era for many in Andhra Pradesh politics, where he was respected for bridging technical expertise with legislative service. Tributes continue to pour in from colleagues, constituents, and alumni networks, remembering him as a principled leader who served with integrity.
