World Stroke Day is observed every year on October 29 to raise awareness about stroke prevention, early recognition and access to timely treatment. The message “Every Minute Counts” emphasizes the importance of acting quickly when stroke symptoms appear. According to global estimates, approximately one in four people aged 25 and above may experience a stroke during their lifetime.

What causes a brain stroke?

A stroke occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is interrupted by a blocked blood vessel or when a blood vessel ruptures, causing bleeding in the brain. These are known as ischaemic and haemorrhagic strokes, respectively.  Hypertension is one of the most important modifiable risk factors for stroke. Poorly controlled blood sugar and elevated cholesterol can contribute to blood vessel damage and atherosclerosis, increasing the risk of stroke.

Steps to reduce stroke risk

The BE FAST approach highlights sudden balance problems, vision changes, facial drooping, arm weakness and speech difficulties. Depending on the type of stroke and the time elapsed, doctors may recommend clot-dissolving medication or mechanical thrombectomy for eligible patients. Regular blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol checks, a balanced diet, physical activity, avoiding tobacco and appropriate medical treatment can help reduce stroke risk.
