In a significant boost to Andhra Pradesh’s renewable energy drive, the Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) has sanctioned Rs. 7,500 crore in funding for Brookfield’s 1,040 MW hybrid renewable energy project in Kurnool district. The project comprising 640 MW of wind and 400 MW of solar capacity entails a total investment of ₹9,910 crore, marking the largest REC sanction ever to a private-sector initiative.
The project is being implemented by Evren, a clean-energy platform jointly developed by Brookfield and Axis Energy. Evren is currently developing over 3 GW of renewable projects across Kurnool and Anantapur as part of Brookfield’s broader 8,000 MW green-energy pipeline in Andhra Pradesh, representing an investment of Rs. 50,000 crore.
This milestone follows Minister Nara Lokesh’s meeting with Brookfield Global President Connor Teskey in London in August 2025, during which both sides discussed partnerships in renewable energy, AI-ready data centers, and green infrastructure. Globally, Brookfield manages over US $1 trillion in assets and has around 46 GW of installed renewable capacity, with a development pipeline of nearly 200 GW. The Andhra Pradesh initiative forms a key part of its expanding green portfolio in Asia.
The REC-backed Kurnool project is India’s first hybrid energy project to integrate state-level grid connectivity with a Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) power purchase agreement, ensuring reliable, round-the-clock power through battery storage and hybrid configuration. Minister Nara Lokesh hailed the sanction, stating that Andhra Pradesh is fast emerging as India’s renewable-energy hub and added that partnering with global leaders like Brookfield will help us build sustainable infrastructure that drives industrial growth and strengthens our energy security.
