A 24-year-old man, Shaik Riaz, accused of fatally stabbing a constable in Nizamabad district, was shot dead by police on Monday after he allegedly tried to attack officers inside a hospital ward.
According to Nizamabad Police Commissioner P Sai Chaitanya, Riaz created a disturbance in the hospital, prompting three on-duty officers to intervene. When they tried to calm him, Riaz reportedly snatched a pistol from one of them and attempted to open fire.
Despite repeated warnings to drop the weapon, he refused. An officer then shot him in self-defense, resulting in his death. A case has been registered, and an inquiry is underway as per standard procedures.
Riaz was earlier arrested in a vehicle theft case and had allegedly stabbed constable Pramod during custody on October 17. Pramod later died of his injuries. Riaz had 61 cases against him, including for murder and robbery.
Director General of Police B Shivadhar Reddy paid tribute to the slain constable, announcing Rs 1 crore ex-gratia, a government job for a family member, and a house plot. While Pramod’s family expressed relief, Riaz's family accused the police of using excessive force during the manhunt.
