AICC Secretary Sachin Sawant on Thursday demanded that the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) be continued in its original form without any dilution, alleging that the BJP-led Central Government is attempting to weaken the landmark employment guarantee program.
A “MGNREGA Bachao Sangram Yatra” rally was organized on Thursday in the SR Nagar Division of the Sanath Nagar constituency under the leadership of PCC Vice President and Sanath Nagar Constituency Congress In-charge Dr. Kota Neelima. The rally was attended by DCC President Deepak John, AICC Secretary Sachin Sawant as the chief guest, along with Ravi Kiran Devulapalli and several division-level Congress leaders.
As part of the campaign, Congress leaders undertook a door-to-door outreach in Bapu Nagar, distributing pamphlets to create awareness among residents about the alleged attempts to dilute MGNREGA. Addressing the gathering, Sachin Sawant alleged that the BJP is conspiring to remove Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the employment guarantee scheme. He added that over 100 Members of Parliament are raising this issue and opposing it in the Lok Sabha.
Speaking on the occasion, DCC President Deepak John accused the BJP-led Central Government of prioritizing the interests of the wealthy while neglecting the poor. He alleged that although the BJP claims to follow Gandhian ideals, it is in fact implementing RSS ideology. Addressing the rally, Dr. Kota Neelima asserted that MGNREGA is not merely a welfare scheme but a statutory right to employment for rural households. She cautioned that the proposed NDA government bill would severely impact rural livelihoods by abolishing demand-based employment and restricting work opportunities under the guise of budgetary constraints.
