Doctors at the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU), Banjara Hills cleared a 10 mm kidney stone from a one-year-old boy using an advanced, non-invasive technique without the need of traditional surgery. The patient, hailing from Bidar in Karnataka was found to be restless and irritable due to a 10 mm stone in his left kidney. The medical team, led by Dr. Gopal Ramdas Tak, opted for Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) using Dornier lithotripter machine.
This "no-incision" approach fragmented the stone without any blood loss and the patient was discharged the same day. Dr. Gopal Ramdas Tak mentioned that by utilizing modern ESWL, the risk of ionizing radiation has been eliminated. Dr. Mallikarjuna C, Managing Director and Chief Consultant Urologist AINU said that ESWL emerges as a safe and highly effective treatment option in pediatric cases.
