Andhra Government rolls out subsidised drones to aid farmers

To modernize agriculture, Andhra Pradesh’s coalition government has launched the distribution of agricultural drones to farmer groups at an 80% subsidy. State Agriculture Minister K. Atchannaidu formally inaugurated the program at the Nimmada camp office, where he also demonstrated drone functionality and distributed units to farmers from Narendra Puram village in Nandigam Mandal.

Describing the move as a first-of-its-kind effort in India, the Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to making farming more efficient and less labor-intensive through the use of cutting-edge technology.

“Using drones can significantly reduce both labour costs and time for farmers. Spraying pesticides over one acre takes just seven minutes with a drone, compared to nearly two hours when done manually by a farmer,” said the Minister.

He urged farmers to adopt modern technology in tune with changing times, pointing out that drones not only lower operational expenses but also expedite critical farming tasks such as spraying, crop monitoring, and pest control. This, he added, leads to healthier crop yields and improved farm productivity.

Drones can also assist in monitoring crop growth and disease outbreaks, providing timely interventions that can improve overall yield. “Technology in the field is no longer optional, it is essential,” the Minister said, highlighting how precision farming can change the future of rural livelihoods.

As part of the event, Minister Atchannaidu unveiled a brochure detailing the benefits and application process for the subsidized drone program.
