AP introduces 24-hour vehicle registration

In a major reform aimed at improving public services and reducing delays in the transport department, the Andhra Pradesh government has decided to complete the permanent registration process for new vehicles within 24 hours of purchase. The decision, announced by Transport and Youth Services Minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy, is being seen as a significant relief for vehicle owners across the state.

According to the minister, the new policy has been introduced under the directions of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu with the objective of providing faster, transparent and hassle-free services to citizens.

One of the most notable features of the new system is the introduction of an auto-approval mechanism. Under the revised process, once a dealer completes the temporary registration of a vehicle, transport department officials must verify and approve the permanent registration application within 24 hours. If officials fail to respond within the stipulated time, the registration will automatically be treated as approved.

Officials said the move is intended to eliminate unnecessary delays, reduce public dependence on middlemen and curb opportunities for corruption in the registration process. The minister noted that thousands of vehicle registrations are currently pending across the state due to procedural delays, and the government is determined to streamline the system.

The new rules, however, will not apply to vehicle owners seeking fancy or special registration numbers, as those allotments are processed separately through auction procedures.

Minister Ramprasad Reddy stated that the government is also ensuring uninterrupted online processing, including during holidays, so that citizens do not face inconvenience while registering their vehicles. The transport department has already prepared the framework for implementation, and the state government has approved the policy for rollout across Andhra Pradesh shortly.

The initiative is expected to significantly improve efficiency in transport department services and enhance the ease of vehicle ownership for the public. Officials believe the reform could emerge as a model for other states looking to modernise vehicle registration systems through digital governance and time-bound approvals.
