AP mulls over open gyms for women

In a progressive move to promote women’s health and fitness, municipal corporations across Andhra Pradesh are preparing to set up women-exclusive open gyms in public spaces. The proposal, put forward by civic officials, is aimed at creating a safe and accessible environment for women to exercise, stay fit, and improve their well-being.

The initiative comes in response to growing concerns that women, especially homemakers and working professionals, often find it difficult to access fitness facilities due to cost, distance, or social discomfort in co-gender spaces. By dedicating certain open gyms exclusively to women, the government hopes to encourage more participation in physical activity.

Vijayawada Municipal Commissioner Dhyanchandra explained the reasoning behind the move. “We have observed that while open gyms are becoming popular, women hesitate to use them when they are crowded with men. By earmarking some open gyms exclusively for women, we want to give them a sense of comfort, privacy, and confidence. This is not just about exercise, but about empowerment and health equity,” he said.

Municipal Corporations are currently identifying suitable locations, particularly in residential colonies, near schools, and within large parks where women feel secure. The facilities will be free to access and will include basic strength and cardio equipment such as pull-up bars, air walkers, leg presses, rowing machines, and cycling stations.

Speaking to Metro India,Soundarya, a 42 year old school teacher, said, “I always wanted to use the open gym in our local park, but it gets very crowded with men in the evenings. Going to private gyms is an expensive affair, which I cannot afford. Having a separate gym space for women in public parks will make it easier for us to exercise without hesitation.”

Sridevi, a homemaker, echoed the sentiment, “Fitness is usually not a priority for women because we juggle so many responsibilities. If the government is providing us with these facilities close to home, it will motivate us to take care of our health.”

Officials note that the initiative aligns with the state’s broader push towards public health and preventive care.

By making fitness facilities freely accessible, the government hopes to reduce lifestyle-related health issues among women, such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. Pilot projects are expected to begin in Vijayawada, Guntur, and Visakhapatnam, with plans to gradually expand to other municipalities. Civic bodies will oversee the installation, while women’s groups and resident welfare associations will be encouraged to play a role in maintaining and monitoring the facilities.
