The Andhra Pradesh Government has submitted a preliminary damage report on Cyclone Montha to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, estimating total losses at ₹5,244 crore across 17 departments. The report highlights extensive destruction to infrastructure, agriculture, and public property across several districts.
The government urged the Centre to provide immediate financial assistance and to dispatch Central teams to assess the damage on the ground. The report noted that the figures are preliminary and that losses could rise as detailed assessments continue. It includes sector-wise data on damage and outlines the state’s relief measures.
According to the report, Cyclone Montha affected 249 mandals across 19 districts, impacting 1,434 villages and 48 towns. Prakasam, Nellore, Bapatla, and Nandyal districts were among the worst-hit. The report said that 161 mandals recorded extremely heavy rainfall, leading to massive flooding. The State also appointed special officers for all affected districts to oversee relief operations.
The report estimates that 4,794 km of Roads & Buildings (R&B) roads and 311 culverts and bridges were damaged, resulting in losses of ₹2,774 crore. The Panchayat Raj Department suffered losses of ₹454 crore with 862 km of rural roads and bridges affected. Urban infrastructure, including roads and buildings in 48 towns, was damaged, requiring ₹109 crore for restoration.
In the agriculture sector, crops in 1.38 lakh hectares were submerged, affecting 1.74 lakh farmers and causing estimated losses of ₹829 crore. Horticultural crops on 12,215 hectares worth ₹40 crore were damaged, while aquaculture farms over 32,000 acres sustained losses of ₹514 crore. The cyclone also led to the loss of 2,261 livestock. The power sector reported severe impact with 2,817 electric poles, 26,575 distribution transformers, and 429 km of power lines damaged, amounting to ₹19 crore in losses. Irrigation structures suffered damage worth ₹234 crore.
In total, 3,045 houses were destroyed, and several Anganwadi centres, schools, primary health centres, and handloom units sustained losses of ₹122 crore. The state established 1,464 relief camps, providing shelter to 1.36 lakh people and has already spent ₹32 crore on immediate relief operations. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is expected to speak with Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon to seek urgent Central support and expedite the visit of Central assessment teams.
