In a first-of-its-kind initiative in India, the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department has partnered with ride-hailing platform Rapido to transform local auto and cab drivers into certified “Guide-Cum-Drivers,” positioning them as cultural ambassadors of the State.

Launched in Vijayawada as a pilot project, the programme seeks to redefine the role of drivers from mere transport providers to informed storytellers capable of showcasing the region’s history, heritage and cultural significance to domestic and international tourists alike. The initiative was formalised during the Visakhapatnam Partnership Summit in the presence of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh, along with senior tourism officials and Rapido co-founder Pavan Guntupalli.

Over two days, 280 drivers, including 32 cab drivers and 248 auto drivers  underwent intensive training at the Tourism Department office in Auto Nagar, Vijayawada.

The sessions focused on equipping drivers with in-depth knowledge of key tourist destinations such as Amaravati, the Buddhist Circuit and Nagarjunasagar, along with structured storytelling techniques developed in collaboration with Jignasa Artworks.

Drivers were also trained in the use of digital tools such as the “Bhashini” language app and Google Translate to enable smoother communication with foreign tourists. Emphasis was laid on professional conduct, safety protocols, hospitality standards and courteous interaction to enhance the overall visitor experience.

To make identification easier, the Rapido app now features a dedicated “Tourist Guide” icon, allowing users to specifically choose certified guide-drivers. Officials say this will ensure both safety and reliability while offering tourists an immersive, informative journey through Vijayawada.

“This programme gives dignity and recognition to our profession,” said Raju, an auto driver from NTR district who completed the training. “Until now, we were just drivers. Now we can proudly present Vijayawada’s history and culture to visitors. It has made us more confident and professional.”

The project is being implemented under the Union Tourism Ministry’s ‘Swadesh Darshan’ scheme as part of the Challenge-Based Destination Development Programme for Nagarjunasagar. The Vijayawada pilot is set to conclude on March 6, after which the government plans to expand the initiative to Tirupati and Visakhapatnam, citing the encouraging response received so far.

Officials described the programme as a fusion of tradition and technology, rooted in the ethos of “Atithi Devo Bhava.” By empowering drivers to serve as grassroots tourism ambassadors, the State aims to strengthen visitor engagement while generating enhanced livelihood opportunities in the urban transport sector.
