Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday praised the Visakhapatnam city police for their prompt and professional handling of an alleged assault on a woman, underscoring the State government’s zero-tolerance stance on incidents that could tarnish the city’s image.

The incident came to light after a woman, identified as Vijayadurga, posted on social media that she had been assaulted and verbally abused by an unidentified man at Jagadamba Centre in Visakhapatnam. Acting swiftly on the information, city police launched an immediate investigation and took the accused into custody, despite the absence of clear identifying details.

Preliminary inquiries indicated that the accused was suffering from mental health issues. The police response drew appreciation from the complainant, who expressed satisfaction with the speed and sensitivity shown by the officers. She later visited the police station herself, confirmed the individual’s mental condition, and requested that he be admitted to a mental health facility. The woman also urged the police to refrain from pursuing punitive legal action against him.

Commending the police for cracking the case with limited evidence, the Chief Minister said the episode reflected the robust law-and-order situation in the city. He noted that the Andhra Pradesh Police remained firmly committed to public safety, particularly the protection of women, adding that Visakhapatnam continues to rank among the safest cities in the country for women.

The Chief Minister directed senior police officials to remain vigilant to prevent any recurrence of such incidents. He also warned against attempts to politicise isolated events to malign the government, stating unequivocally that any effort to damage the “Visakhapatnam brand image” would not be tolerated.
