The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) introduced by Singareni Collieries Company Limited has started delivering positive results within just four months of its launch, helping the company save nearly Rs.26 lakh through efficient use of surplus solar power.

The project was established at the 28 MW solar power plant in Mandamarri following directions from the Telangana Government to promote renewable energy and improve power utilization. Singareni invested Rs.2.5 crore in setting up the 1 MW BESS facility, which is the first and largest project of its kind in the state.

The BESS technology allows excess electricity generated during daytime from solar plants to be stored in batteries instead of being sent free of cost to the Telangana power grid. The stored energy is later utilized whenever required for local operations in mines and residential colonies.

Singareni currently operates solar plants with a total capacity of 245.5 MW at eight locations across Telangana. While a large portion of the power generated is used for company operations, surplus electricity from in-house plants was previously being supplied to the grid without any financial return due to existing power agreements. After the BESS unit became operational in January this year, around 3.35 lakh units of surplus electricity were successfully stored and reused. This helped the company achieve financial savings of Rs.25.66 lakh in a short period.

Singareni officials described the project as a successful experiment and stated that the company is prepared to take up more renewable energy storage projects in the coming years.
