The much-awaited Bhogapuram International Airport, one of Andhra Pradesh’s flagship infrastructure projects, is nearing completion, paving the way for a new era of economic growth and global connectivity in North Andhra. Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu on Tuesday inspected the airport and reviewed the progress of construction works.
The Minister said the project gathered momentum after the formation of the coalition government, with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu directing officials and GMR Group to expedite construction. He noted that the developer had completed the works as per schedule and announced that the airport has already secured its Aerodrome Licence, marking a major milestone ahead of commercial operations.
Rammohan Naidu said the airport would be formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, subject to the Prime Minister’s availability. Following the inauguration, all commercial flight operations from the existing Visakhapatnam Airport are expected to be shifted to Bhogapuram within a week, enabling full-scale operations. Spread across a 78,000-square-metre terminal building, the airport has been designed to handle up to 40 million passengers annually, making it one of the largest aviation hubs in southern India.
The terminal architecture reflects the rich art, culture and heritage of North Andhra, giving the facility a distinct regional identity while meeting international standards. The airport is expected to significantly enhance air connectivity, boost tourism, attract investments and strengthen logistics and cargo infrastructure across the Visakhapatnam-Vizianagaram region. With world-class passenger facilities and modern aviation infrastructure, Bhogapuram International Airport is poised to emerge as a key gateway for Andhra Pradesh and a major driver of economic development in the region.
