Health advisory urges people to stay hydrated by drinking sufficient water and recommends the use of ORS and homemade beverages like lemon water and buttermilk during extreme heat conditions

As the maximum temperature is going to rise up to 2 to 3 degree Celsius in the next three days, the Telangana health department has issued a public advisory to caution the people of the state. India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicated a gradual rise in maximum temperature by 2 to 3 degree Celsius over the next three days.The advisory, issued by Telangana’s Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, outlines precautionary measures to protect citizens from the adverse effects of extreme heat.

The advisory urged people to stay hydrated by drinking sufficient water, even when they are not thirsty, and recommends the use of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) and homemade beverages such as lemon water and buttermilk. People are also encouraged to consume water-rich seasonal fruits like watermelon, oranges and cucumbers more to keep themselves hydrated.

To minimize the exposure to the sun, citizens are advised to wear light-colored, loose cotton clothing and cover their heads with caps, umbrellas or traditional headgear. The health department has also recommended staying indoors in well-ventilated spaces, keeping curtains drawn during peak sunlight hours and scheduling outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day.

And also authorities have cautioned against stepping out between 12pm and 3pm, engaging in strenuous activities during peak heat, and walking barefoot. Additionally, people are advised to avoid alcohol, caffeinated beverages and high-protein, junk food or spicy foods, which could lead to dehydration or digestive issues.

The advisory also highlighted the warning signs of heat-related illnesses, including confusion, dizziness, high body temperature (above 40°C), nausea, rapid heartbeat, and dry, red skin. In case of any of these symptoms, individuals are urged to seek immediate medical attention at government health facilities.

As part of precautionary measures, the government has ensured that all public health centres are equipped with special beds, IV fluids, essential medicines and oral rehydration solutions. Healthcare workers, including ASHAs and Anganwadi workers, have been provided with ORS sachets to assist people in need, the advisory said.
