Cantonment CEO obstacle to development, says MP Eatala

Rajender appealed to officials not to harass street vendors, small shopkeepers and petty traders, saying many educated and economically weaker people depended on such businesses for their livelihoods

Malkajgiri BJP MP Eatala Rajender has alleged that the attitude and functioning of the newly appointed Cantonment CEO is hampering development works and effective utilisation of available funds in the Cantonment area.

Speaking as chief guest at the foundation-laying ceremony for CC roads in SBI Colony, Chandulal Bowli and Jaya Nagar Colony, the BJP MP said the road works, taken up with Cantonment funds, would cost Rs.59 lakh.

He described the Cantonment as one of the most beautiful and hygienic areas of the twin cities, citing its parks, low-rise buildings and infrastructure. However, he alleged that contractors were reluctant to take up works because of the CEO's conduct, resulting in delays and under-utilisation of funds.

Rajender said the situation had led some people to question whether the Cantonment should eventually be merged with the GHMC. He said nominated board member Banuka Narmada Mallikarjun was working to provide civic amenities and added that he had approached the Centre for around Rs.18 crore in funds. He also said efforts were under way to utilise pending tax and stamp-duty revenues for public works.

Rajender further appealed to officials not to harass street vendors, small shopkeepers and petty traders, saying many educated and economically weaker people depended on such businesses for their livelihoods.

“Do not jeopardise the livelihoods of the poor”, he said, urging officials and public representatives to act with greater sensitivity towards small traders.
