CARE Hospitals - Malakpet successfully performed a complex Mitral Valve Replacement (MVR) surgery on a 29-year-old underweight woman from Nalgonda under the Telangana Aarogyasri Scheme.

The patient, Rajitha (name changed), weighed just 30 kg and suffered from severe mitral valve disease, along with hypothyroidism and undiagnosed partial seizures. She presented with symptoms of shortness of breath and palpitations. Further evaluation confirmed critical mitral valve dysfunction, likely stemming from undiagnosed childhood rheumatic fever.

Dr. Sudheer Gandrakota, Consultant Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon at CARE Hospitals, explained that despite her young age, her severely low body weight and additional health conditions placed her at high surgical risk. Her STS (Society of Thoracic Surgeons) operative risk score exceeded 15%, compared to the typical <2% in healthier individuals.

The cardiac team, led by Dr. Gandrakota, conducted extensive pre-operative planning and post-operative monitoring to manage the patient’s complex condition. Thanks to their expertise and coordinated efforts, the surgery was completed successfully.

The patient made a remarkable recovery and was discharged in stable condition on the fourth day post-surgery, marking another milestone for CARE Hospitals in delivering advanced, high-risk cardiac care.
