CARE Hospitals saves 9-month-old with rare tumor

Doctors at CARE Hospitals, HITEC City treated a nine-month-old international patient from Somalia suffering from life-threatening hydrocephalus which caused excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid inside the brain, dangerously increasing pressure and resulting in abnormal enlargement of the baby's head.  A multidisciplinary team performed two complex brain procedures, relieving the pressure on the brain and removing the tumor.

The baby, Shafie Mohamed Hussain, was brought to CARE Hospitals after his family noticed that he had become unusually dull and was not responding normally. Detailed evaluation identified a rare glioneural tumor which also resulted in an abnormal increase in the baby's head size. The neurosurgical team decided to address both problems during a single operation. Following the surgery, the baby recovered well.

He was discharged in three days after undergoing the surgery and is recovering well. Dr. Laxminadh Sivaraju, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon mentioned that the pressure was relieved by inserting a VP shunt and then the tumor was removed during the same surgery and added that the successful outcome was possible because of the teamwork between Neurosurgery, Anaesthesia, Radiology, Paediatrics and Pathology teams.
