Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy will hold a special meeting with ministers on the 12th of this month to review the impact of El Niño and the prevailing drought-like conditions in the State. The meeting will discuss the situation in areas that have received deficient rainfall, the difficulties faced by farmers and immediate measures to be taken by the government.
The meeting will focus on agriculture, irrigation, drinking water supply, rising power demand and other urgent requirements. The recent State Cabinet meeting held extensive discussions on the rainfall deficit and drought-like conditions.Under the impact of El Niño, the State has recorded 17 per cent less rainfall than normal, with drought-like conditions prevailing in nearly 235 mandals.
The State government has already passed a resolution in the Assembly urging the Centre to declare drought-affected mandals and provide adequate financial assistance. It has sought a special package of Rs 20,000 crore. The Chief Minister is likely to discuss relief measures for rain-deficient areas, the action plan prepared by the Cabinet sub-committee, and suggestions from the all-party meeting, farmers’ organisations and experts from various fields.
